(7/9/10) Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, has received approval from the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity to name its new Center for Nursing and Health Education after Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. From August 25 through September 5 the College plans to illuminate several campus buildings in honor of Mother Teresa’s birthday and the anniversary of her death. Benedictine president Stephen Minnis said, “Mother Teresa loved Benedictine spirituality and Benedictine College loves her back . . . We are naming the building after Mother Teresa because of her care for the sick, fidelity to the Church, and message of love for the poor.” Other events honoring Mother Teresa on the Benedictine campus include a block party for students in honor of her birthday; the installation of an original oil painting of “the future saint” in the Nursing Center; and a prayer for her canonization at the first home football game on September 4. Benedictine College is featured in The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College for its strong Catholic identity. (Source: Benedictine College)
