(11/23/09) On November 16, Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., president of The Catholic University of America (CUA), gave an address to the U.S. bishops assembled for their 2009 Fall General Assembly in Baltimore. Last October, Fr. O’Connell announced his resignation from the CUA presidency effective in 2010. During his speech, Fr. O’Connell was interrupted “by the applause of the hundreds of bishops gathered when he commented upon the importance he placed on fostering CUA’s Catholic identity.” After he concluded, Francis Cardinal George, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, thanked Fr. O’Connell for his leadership of “the bishops’ university.” This was received by the bishops with a “sustained standing ovation.” The full text of Fr. O’Connell’s remarks is posted here. The Catholic University of America is promoted for its strong Catholic identity in The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College, which is a free online resource.
