This edition of The Newman Guide builds in substantial ways off of the inaugural edition published on All Saints Day in 2007. The first edition was researched and written by Joseph Esposito and Evangeline Jones, who served as the Director and Deputy Director of The Cardinal Newman Society’s Center for the Study of Catholic Higher Education until April 2009.  This edition relies substantially on their additional research, updates, additions and editorial contributions.

Significant additions were made by Cardinal Newman Society President Patrick Reilly and Executive Vice President Thomas Mead, and they made the final editorial judgements. Mr. Mead was also responsible for layout and design.

We are very thankful for the contribution of the foreword from Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R., and essays from Father C. John McCloskey III, Dr. Peter Kreeft, Eileen Cubanski, Phil Lenahan and Kathryn Lopez. We also thank Our Sunday Visitor for the rights to incorporate portions of Mr. Lenahan’s published work.

We are also grateful for the assistance of The Cardinal Newman Society’s Adam Wilson, David Costanzo and Karen Spiering for their work fact checking, copy editing and researching material for the college profiles. We are indebted to the many individuals who offered insights into the colleges through interviews. These include staff, faculty, students and alumni. College representatives were very gracious in providing photographs, checking facts and in other ways helping us better understand the finer points of their institutions. Although the colleges recommended in The Newman Guide are examples of faithful Catholic colleges, the editors do not intend to suggest that other institutions are not fully Catholic as recognized under the authority of the Catholic bishops. Nevertheless, it is apparent that there is a genuine crisis on many other Catholic campuses. Founded in 1993, The Cardinal Newman Society is dedicated to renewing and strengthening Catholic identity at Catholic colleges and universities. The Society focuses its work on assisting students, school officials and alumni; urging fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church; and researching activities both on campus and in the classroom.
